Games that respect your battery

Games that respect your battery

I keep a little log of battery drain for every game I review, measured over a steady thirty-minute session with the screen at a fixed brightness. It's not lab-grade, but the patterns are clear and consistent enough to be useful.

The heaviest offenders are almost always racers and 3D action games. Constant motion, lots of particle effects, and a high frame rate all stack up. A racer like Neon Dash Circuit can pull real percentages fast, especially if the phone starts throttling from heat.

On the other end, flat and stylized games sip hardly anything. Exploration games with hand-drawn art, tile puzzles, and tap-based casual collections tend to be the kindest to your charge. Hollowreach barely moved the needle in my testing.

The good news is settings can bridge the gap. Capping the frame rate to 30, lowering resolution scale, and turning off bloom and particles will often cut drain by a third or more. If a game gives you those toggles, use them — you rarely miss the eye candy once you're actually playing.
