Touch controls that don't fight you
The number one reason I quit a mobile game early isn't the graphics or the story — it's controls that assume I'm sitting still with both hands free. Most of us play phones while standing, walking, or half-watching something else. A good control scheme plans for that.
The games that get it right tend to share a few habits. They put the important button near where your thumb naturally rests. They forgive a slightly-off tap instead of punishing it. And crucially, they rarely ask you to do two precise things at the same moment.
Virtual sticks are fine when they're anchored loosely — meaning the stick appears wherever you press, not in a fixed spot you have to find. Fixed sticks look tidy in screenshots and feel awful in motion. Watch for that distinction when you try something new.
My advice: before you judge a game, dig into its control settings. A surprising number of mediocre-feeling games have a 'hybrid' or 'simplified' mode tucked away that completely changes how they feel. Spend two minutes there before you write the whole thing off.
