The best games for one-handed commute play

June 16, 2026 · Marko Jensen

There's a whole category of game that only really makes sense standing on a crowded train with one thumb free. Not every genre survives that constraint, and the ones that do tend to get overlooked in big reviews.

Puzzle games are the obvious winners. Grid Garden plays perfectly with one thumb — slide a tile, undo if it's wrong, no pressure. Casual collections like Casinacho Games fit the slot too, since each round is short enough to pause the second you need to move.

Exploration games can work if they're paced calmly. Hollowreach never demands fast reactions, so you can play it in slow drifts between stops. The trick is that nothing in it fails you for pausing mid-action.

What to avoid: anything with tilt controls, anything with a real-time timer, and anything that needs two thumbs on screen at once. Save those for the couch. For the commute, keep it simple, pausable, and forgiving.
